Diamond grading reports: GIA and IGI
What a grading report contains, how to check its number, and why a report is not a valuation.
A grading report is an independent laboratory's description of one stone: shape, measurements, carat, colour, clarity, cut, polish, symmetry and fluorescence, often with a plot of inner features.
GIA and IGI
GIA (Gemological Institute of America) grades mostly natural diamonds and is known for strict colour and clarity grading. IGI (International Gemological Institute) grades many lab-grown diamonds and much of the world's jewellery.
Checking a report
On every diamond page you find the report number and a link to the lab's own report check. Many stones also carry the report number laser-inscribed on the girdle.
Report is not valuation
A report describes quality; it does not state a price. Insurance valuations are a separate document.
